Attracting Younger Members
The key to the future of Sons of Norway is
attracting younger members to join our
organization. We now have approximately 5,000
members between the ages of 0 and 29, compared
to about 6,000 members in this age group five
years ago. In a similar fashion, membership is
down approximately 10 percent (from 12,000 to
10,000) in the 30- to 50-year-old age group.
We
are trying a number of things to correct this
drop in younger members. The Family Membership
Classification approved at the last
International Convention is a step in the right
direction. The Adopt A School program has been a
huge success and also should be helpful in
bringing in new younger members through our
lodge involvement in neighboring schools.
I
encourage all lodges to schedule family-friendly
events and invite family friends to join you.
Change your social meetings so that younger
members are excited about coming to lodge
events. I also believe that increased emphasis
on youth gives the senior lodge members the
opportunity to pass the "torch of leadership."
This is the way Sons of Norway will continue to
grow and prosper in the future.
In
this issue, we've included stories that should
appeal to readers of all ages. Our centennial
article looks at Norway's education system,
which promotes lifelong learning and education
for all. This issue also includes our annual
festival guide, although it looks a little
different than in past years. Because 2005 is
such a monumental year for Norway, we decided to
focus solely on centennial events and festivals.
We invite you to peruse the listings and join in
Norway's celebration!
Fraternally,
Jim Olson
